What makes a bed French?
A French style bed can be strictly symmetrical, softly rounded or Empire-inspired, and that range is what makes the family so rich. What they share is proportion more than ornament: lines that flow rather than interrupt, details that are refined and restrained and, in natural finishes, a surface that lets the wood show. A French wooden bed like this is meant to be calm, and it suits both a classic and a modern bedroom. Cherry wood is our main wood. Some parts may be made of veneer or other wood-based materials. For anyone looking for luxury French beds, the difference lies in the making: solid wood, handmade in Europe, finished to order.
French style beds: Directoire and Louis Philippe
Directoire takes its inspiration from France at the end of the eighteenth century: clean lines, symmetry and a restrained elegance. As a French style bed frame it is available in several models, each with a headboard of straight lines and a slight curve, 95 or 121 cm high depending on the model. Its restraint makes it an easy companion to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Louis Philippe, with its Orleans and Victoria models, belongs to the nineteenth century and is softer: flowing lines, rounded forms and a warm, inviting presence. Together they are the heart of our French beds: one calm and symmetrical, the other rounded and warm, so that you can match the bed to the mood of your room.
Louis Philippe sleigh beds: Orleans and Victoria
On a sleigh bed, the headboard and the high footboard both roll outwards in a curve; seen from the side, you recognise the line of a sleigh. Our Orleans beds with a high footboard, in reddish brown patina and in warm brown antique, and the Victoria with a high footboard are sleigh beds; the Victoria is recognisable by the vertical decorative lines on its headboard and footboard. The models with a low footboard are sleigh-inspired: a curved headboard, a lower and calmer footboard. The shape is a classic of French bedrooms, and the finish remains yours to choose, from deep, patinated wood tones to lighter colours.
Ermitage: a complete French style bedroom suite
Ermitage is our Empire-inspired line, with refined fittings on the legs, grooves that add texture and, on several models, woven detailing in the headboard. Its palette draws on deep reds, blues, gold and soft pastels. It is inspired by the Empire style rather than a copy of it, so if you are searching for an Empire bed, this is where to look. The line goes beyond the bed. Bedside tables, chests of drawers and cabinets in the same style make a complete French style bedroom suite, so that bed and furniture speak one language.
White, cream and painted French beds
A French white bed is a timeless choice for a light, romantic room, but French beds look as good in cream, soft pastels, deep blue or black. Directoire is available in white, cream and black, among other colours, and Ermitage in white, cream, black and blue. Choose from 27 colours and wood tones; the colours are hand-painted. Made to order in your size and colour
Every French bed frame is made to order. A French style king bed is possible on request, for a king (150 × 200 cm) or super king (180 × 200 cm) mattress. More information about mattress sizes and bespoke options is available in our bed collection. Outer dimensions of the frame are confirmed separately from the mattress size, and colour and finish are free to choose. Is there a French style you cannot find here?
